Maho Beach, St. Maarten

Maho Beach, St. Maarten

St. Maarten

September 15, 2016 by Sheila Collins

To celebrate my birthday this year I wanted nothing more than to lie on a beach and soak in the sun and the ocean breeze.  My boyfriend however is not much of a beach fan so I wanted to think of somewhere we could go and both have fun.  I remembered seeing videos of planes flying closely over bright aqua water and instantly thought St. Maarten would be a place that would spark both of our interests.

Upon arrival to the island we rented a car and drove about 10 minutes to our hotel, The Royal Palm Beach Resort.  The hotel was really affordable and we even received a free upgrade to a two-bedroom suite with ocean view! #Winning. The first evening we settled in, rested on the beach, and ate a delicious meal.  I recommend the grilled red snapper at Lee’s Roadside Grill.

The next morning we took a day trip to St. Barths. It was about a 45-minute boat ride and the chance to explore some place new.  We visited Shell Beach, which was very quiet and relaxing.  I swear I saw Kevin Hart jumping off of a yacht in the distance lol.  Upon returning to St. Maarten we visited the Sonesta Maho Beach Casino- we weren’t quite as lucky as we had hoped…

Finally the next day it was time to watch the planes land in St. Maarten! We woke up bright and early and headed over to the Sunset Bar and Grill.  This restaurant is perfectly situated to sit and watch the planes come in.  All of the planes were fun to watch but the most excited was the turquoise blue 747 KLM plane.

After having lunch while plane watching we did a quick hike up Fort Lois for breath taking views of the island.  Fort Lois is definitely a must see in my opinion if you visit.  After becoming all sweaty from the hike we drove over to Happy Bay Beach for some snorkeling.

This was such an amazing trip and a great way to celebrate my birthday!
